Laura Martínez de Carvajal became the first woman to get a degree in Medicine in Cuba.

She had to get over jokes and offensive comments generated by her only presence in the classroom, where all the students were men who considered she was extravagant. She also suffered as a result of the obstacles imposed by some teachers. She was brilliant and intelligent as a student and was the first ophthalmologist graduated in the country. On august 24th, 1941 she died in the neighborhood of Cotorro, in the city of Havana.
