Carlos Puebla, considered the Singer of The People dies in Havana.
All his work shows the history of the Cuban Revolution and the most remarkable moments the Cuban people went through in the first five years of the Cuban revolutionary process. The life and work of relevant figures of our history were an inspiration for him, as we can mention songs dedicated to Camilo Cienfuegos and to Ernesto Che Guevara. His song “Hasta Siempre” is the most famous among the ones showing the significance of life and work of Che.
The Commander Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán was an exceptional fighter and a leader of the Cuban Revolution. He died on October 28th, 1959 when the light aircraft he was traveling on crashed in the sea. This February six we celebrate the 87 anniversary of Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán´s birth. He became a prestigious fighter and leader of the Cuban during the course of his short life. He was born on February 6th, 1932in a house located in Pocito Street 71 in Lawton, a neighborhood in Havana in the municipality Diez de Octubre. He showed his love for his family and his country since he was very young.
Ernesto Guevara de la Serna was born in Argentina on June 14th, 1928. Above all he felt as a son of the big Latin American homeland and as one – as he stated-he was willing to give his life for the liberation of any of the countries in the continent without asking for anything in return, without demanding anything, without exploiting any one. His behavior was always in correlation with a deep motivation. He met Fidel Castro in Mexico in 1955 and immediately he joined the group of Cuban revolutionaries that were training to come back to Cuba to continue fighting Batista´s dictatorship. Che Guevara was in the group of 82 members of an expedition, who travelled to Cuba in 1956. He was notable due to his active participation in the revolutionary war. He helped in the defense and development of the Revolution after its triumph and had significant responsibilities. In 1965 he went out of Cuba to give solidary support to other peoples in the world. He had his last combat in Bolivia on October 8th, 1967. He was wounded and was arrested then murdered the next day.
The song “Hasta Siempre” is a symbol. It was the result of Carlos Puebla´s inspiration. He was considered The Singer of the People.
At the beginning of the song, referring to Che Guevara, he states:
We learned to love you / from the historic height
Where the sun of your bravely / laid a siege to death.
Here we keep the clear, / the deep transparency
Of your beloved presence / Commander Che Guevara.
Carlos Puebla wrote this song, as he said, on October three, 1965 at that very moment in which Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, read the goodbye letter Che had given him when he left our country. He went out of Cuba to support the revolutionary fight of other peoples in the world.
Carlos Puebla detailed:
Your revolutionary love / Leads you to another responsibility / Where the determination is hoped / and your liberation arm .
And assured: Here we keep the clear, / the deep transparency
Of your beloved presence / Commander Che Guevara.
In the course of time the song “Hasta Siempre” of Carlos Puebla, became very famous. It has many versions and has been performed by groups and artists from Cuba and from several parts of the world.
