José de la Luz y Caballero was born in Havana.

He studied at the College Seminary San Carlos and San Ambrosio and was a student of Felix Varela. Then, he was the head of Philosophy department between the years 1824 and 1828.  He was one of the outstanding figures in the Pedagogy field through all his life. He thought teaching should give morality, patriotic and ideological convictions together with the instruction of human beings. Likewise should show respect to beauty in its several expressions and even hygienic habits. The active participation of the students was the base for his concept of education and their needs and motivations were of great importance for him.

College Seminary San Carlos and San Ambrosio

It is the institution of higher studies of the Catholic Church which was founded in 1689. It was initially at the Historic Center of Havana. The building has two facades, one facing San Ignacio Street and the other facing San Telmo Street and now it is the Cultural Center Father Felix Varela. The new building for the Seminary is in the municipality of Guanabacoa and was opened on November 3rd, 2010.  

Felix Varela

He died in San Agustin de la Florida on February 25th, 1853. It was the place where he lived in his exile time when trying to find the adequate climate to face the disease he was suffering from since years ago. Father Felix Varela was considered the first revolutionary intellectual, the man who taught us to think, as one of his students said. Felix Varela was born on November 20th, 1788. He was one of the most famous figures of the 19th Century. He supported the needed disconnection of Cuba from Spain, the fight for the independence, the abolition of slavery as well as the radical modernization of teaching in our territory.
