José Martí National Library to be declared a National Monument

The José Martí National Library will be declared a National Monument on Wednesday, according to the National Council of Cuban Cultural Heritage on its Twitter account.

The awarding will take place at a ceremony in the afternoon hours of this June 30, at the cultural entity itself in this capital, organized by said Council and the National Commission of Monuments of the Republic of Cuba.

"The National Library of Cuba will be declared a National Monument, tomorrow June 30, at 3pm in an act organized by the @patrimonio_Cuba, the National Commission of Monuments and the @BiblioNacCuba," tweeted the National Council of Cuban Cultural Heritage.

That center has a digital library and numerous rooms, houses the country's documentary, bibliographic, artistic and sound heritage treasure, as well as the most representative of universal culture.

The National Library, inaugurated on October 18, 1901 and named after Cuba's National Hero in 1949, is a symbol of Cuban culture inside and outside the country and has been the scene of many transcendental moments for national culture, among them Palabras a los intelectuales, a memorable speech by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro to the country's intelligentsia, an event that also celebrates its 60th anniversary this June 30.

In that sense, the institution itself hosted on Monday afternoon the central act of commemoration of that date, led by the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, who said that "we will not give away the Revolution or its spaces. We must and can manage them better, learning more from everything and everyone."
