. The construction of the Colón Cemetery was concluded in Havana

It is the largest in Cuba and one of the largest in Latin America.

For the great quantity of monuments of national and foreign sculptors of dissimilar architectural manifestations and styles, this necropolis is of great significance. It highlights the grandeur of its cover that is topped by a sculptural ensemble that symbolizes the three theological virtues, faith, hope and charity. This sculptural group was the work of the Cuban sculptor José Vilalta de Saavedra, author of other important monuments in this cemetery.

José Vilalta Saavedra

He was one of the first Cuban sculptors trained in Carrara. He became known in Cuba when he presented the project of the Monument to the eight students of Medicine and obtained the first place. His work is also present in the Colón Cemetery in Havana. He was also the creator of the statue to José Martí in Havana's Central Park, which was the first one erected in Cuba in homage to this great figure of our history.
