Alert on increased severity in pregnant women with COVID-19

From the first trimester of 2021, an increase in the severity of pregnant women who become ill with COVID-19 has been evident, informed in this capital Sarah Urgellés Carreras, senior lecturer at the Luis Díaz Soto Military Hospital.

The specialist of II degree of Gynecology and Obstetrics pointed out that, at this stage, and as a result of the spread of different variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the sick women have evolved to severe stages, and besides extended pneumonia, syndromes of respiratory distress or acute respiratory insufficiency appear, which have even led to death.

Once the pregnant woman needs mechanical ventilation, it is very difficult for the pregnancy to evolve favorably, said Urgellés Carreras, and he pointed out that among the interventions that specialists must perform is the interruption of the pregnancy in stages in which there is no fetal maturity, so there is a negative impact on infant mortality.

She explained that in pregnant women the evolution to severity occurs in the face of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity, but in 2020 most of the sick women had a favorable evolution, a behavior that has changed in the first trimester of 2021.

The doctor insisted on the need for prevention and not to hide the symptoms in order to seek medical attention early.

The Luis Díaz Soto Military Hospital is a health institution that was a pioneer in Cuba in the care of this type of patients and has consolidated its work to the follow-up of pregnant women who exceed the disease.
