Exhibit dedicated to Fidel Castro opens at Casa de las Americas

The cultural institution Casa de las Americas has inaugurated in Havana an exhibition covering facets of the revolutionary, statesman and intellectual career of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

According to La Ventana, news portal, about 160 books, magazines and pamphlets entitled Dialogues: Fidel and the Intellectuals will be on display for a month at the Jose Antonio Echevarria Library of the entity.

The exhibition is a tribute to the 60th anniversary of the speech Palabras a los intelectuales (Words to the Intellectuals), the result of a dialogue between the Commander-in-Chief and Cuban creators on June 16, 23 and 30, 1961 at the National Library.

The exhibition tour begins with volumes related to the Moncada Epic, the period of the revolutionary struggle and the first months after the triumph of January 1959, events that shaped the character of the leader.

These texts are accompanied by works published in 1961 by outstanding Cuban writers, including Nicolás Guillén, Cintio Vitier, Roberto Fernández Retamar, Juan Marinello, Virgilio Piñera, Fayad Jamis, Samuel Feijoo and Onelio Jorge Cardoso.

The exhibition presents publications on the work of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists, and documents that show the constant dialogue that always existed between Fidel and the intellectuals.

It also includes important speeches by the Commander-in-Chief, interviews with him and testimonies about his career, as well as trips and meetings with world leaders such as Salvador Allende, Hugo Chávez, Evo Morales, and Lula Da Silva.

Casa de las Americas was also able to gather documents that deal with the work of Cuban intellectuals from different perspectives, published in books and magazines that show the transcendence of the Revolution's cultural policies and the interest in analyzing its evolution.

Founded on April 28, 1959, the regional institution constitutes a space of concurrence of the aesthetic vanguards and contemporary renovation of artistic and literary paradigms in the region.

This initiative is part of a plan of activities devised by the Ministry of Culture and Cuban creators to commemorate Fidel's allegorical speech and encourage dialogue and criticism about the challenges of Cuban cultural policy.
