Juan Francisco Calcagno Monzón was born in the town of Güines, then province of Havana.

He passionately defended the necessary emancipation of the slaves. He was an outstanding writer who contributed to the cultural development of the country through his diverse works. During the last years of his life he remained in Europe and died in Barcelona on March 22, 1903.  His remains were transferred to Cuba and remain in the cemetery of Güines, in the Pantheon of the Lodge that bears his name, belonging to the Knights of the Light Order.

Knights of the Light Order

It is a fraternal institution that has presence in Cuba. Since its beginning in the Cuban territory, it was related to the struggle for independence, since some of its members contributed to the struggle for the liberation of Cuba from Spanish colonial rule. The Order Caballero de la Luz was created in Philadelphia on May 9, 1873, with the objective of being an institution of mutual aid, which at the same time worked for the independence of Cuba. Its first president was José González Curbelo.
