Vilma Espín, the outstanding revolutionary leader and fighter, dies in Havana.

During the struggle against the Batista dictatorship, she was a member of the National Directorate of the 26th of July Movement. In 1958 she joined the Second Eastern Front "Frank País" led by Commander Raúl Castro. After the revolutionary triumph she was elected President of the Federation of Cuban Women on February 23, 1960. In 1965 she was a member of the first Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. Also since 1976 she was elected deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power of the Republic of Cuba and member of its Council of State. In addition, she was a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba.

Second Eastern Front Frank País

It was created on March 11, 1958 in the mountains of Oriente province under the leadership of then Commander Raúl Castro. It was part of the strategy of Commander Fidel Castro to expand the radius of action of the Rebel Army that developed the revolutionary struggle against the Batista dictatorship.

Federation of Cuban Women 

It is an important mass organization that groups and represents Cuban women. Created on August 23, 1960, its president was Vilma Espín. The organization develops policies and programs aimed at achieving women's full and equal rights at all levels of society. Among its objectives is to provide systematic attention to the formation and welfare of the new generations.
