Máximo Gómez Baez dies in Havana

He was born in the Dominican Republic on November 18th, 1836. He joined the fights for the Cuban independence on October 14th, 1868. He was one of the pillars of the Ten Years War and the General in Chief of the Cuban revolutionary troops in the war restarted in 1895. He declares himself a Cuban citizen, which was always honored, due to his decision of fighting for Cuba until the breaking- off of the Spanish occupation.

Dominican Republic

It is a country located in the Caribbean, in the central area of the West Indies.      It occupies the central and east part of the island of La Española and Santo Domingo is its capital city.  It limits on the north with the Atlantic Ocean, on the east with Canal de la Mona, which separates it from Puerto Rico. It limits on the South with the Caribbean Sea and on the west with Haiti. It has a 48 448 square kilometers surface.

Ten Years War

It is also known as The War of the 68 (Guerra del 68). It was the first of the three wars that were done in Cuba between the years 1868 – 1878. Its plan was to reach the independence of Cuba.  This war started at the sugar refinery in the farm Demajagua on October 10th, 1869. Carlos Manuel de Céspedes was the owner of this place.  There is a significant monument in the place where the farm was and now is the National Park La Demajagua, since 1968.
