The town of Guanabacoa is founded by law of the Cabildo of the town of San Cristóbal de La Habana.

The Havana town council decided to found a town for the scattered indigenous people that inhabited its jurisdiction. This town was finally established in the place called Guanabacoa, near the town of San Cristóbal de La Habana. A church was built in the area in 1578 under the patronage of the Virgin Mary of the Assumption. On August 14, 1743, Guanabacoa was granted the title of city by Royal Decree of the Spanish Monarch Felipe V and was also granted the coat of arms.
