María de las Mercedes Valdés Mendoza dies in Guanabacoa.

She was educated with care by her parents. When she was very young she read classical and romantic works and began to cultivate poetry. At the beginning of her literary career she was not publicly known. She could have gone unnoticed but a poem of her authorship called "La rosa blanca" (The White Rose) read by Francisco Javier Foxá in a gathering of Nicolás Azcárate was received with applause and celebrations. From that moment on he began to stand out in literary circles.

 

NICOLAS AZCARATE

Notable lawyer and writer born on July 21, 1828 in Havana. He collaborated in the most important publications of his time. He was founder of the Guanabacoa Lyceum and was president and secretary of the literature section and Martí of this institution. He died on July 1, 1894 in the present capital.
