Juan Tomás Roig Mesa is born in Santiago de las Vegas, in Havana.

He was a remarkable scientist, eminent in his research and teaching work related to natural sciences. National and foreign institutions recognized him as one of the most eminent botanic of Cuba. He dedicated his live to study the Cuban environment and to find new natural rich sources. His studies about medicinal plants were his most important contribution to science. After the triumph of the revolution he continued supporting the development and the defense of his country and took part in the literacy campaign. He died on February 20th, 1971 in Havana. A guaican tree was planted by his grave. This was a tree he had research on carefully. He wanted his body to feed it and once stated: “I want to live in the beauty of its trunk, of its branches and its flowers” #
