José (Cheo) Belén Puig dies in Havana

He was an outstanding pianist, composer and conductor. He created his group in 1934 in which the excellent singer Pablo Quevedo, was at the beginning.  Paulina Álvarez, other important figure of the national music, known as the Queen of Danzonete, was part of his group as well. He was a danzones composer and was considered one of the best pianists of danzones in Cuba who placed anthological works in the national stave.

He was known as the "Star of the crystal voice". He was of humble origins but was extremely popular among Cuban singers of his time. He got his higher reputation with Cheo Belén Puig Orchestra in the radio station CMQ. Working for the radio was perfect for his expression although he performed in theaters and dance shows. His popularity  brought out songs like Reina africana(African Queen), Una sola miradita (An only glance), Campanitas de cristal ( Glass small bells) y La clave misteriosa (The mysterious answer), among other hits.

 Paulina Álvarez

Paulina Alvarez was considered the Empress of Danzonete. She was an outstanding singer who was considered the first woman to perform Danzonete in the year 1929. She had a career as a singer and performed in some groups until 1938 when she created her own orchestra. She was very popular in the musical field in and outside our country. Significant records firms recorded her. She died in Havana on July 22nd, 1965.
