Eleazar Jiménez Zerquera died in Havana

He was born in Ciego de Ávila on June 25, 1928. Eleazar Jiménez became an emblematic figure of Cuban chess. His father was a great lover of the science game and Eleazar learned to play chess at home when he was a child. He was several times Champion of Cuba. He achieved the title of International Master which was conferred on him in 1963 and was also a three-time Pan American champion. He played in seven Olympics and in five of them he was the foremost player defending the national colors.

Ciego de Ávila

Ciego de Ávila ranks sixth among the fifteen provinces in Cuba, considering its surface, which amounts to more than 6,910 square kilometers, including 589.3 kms of adjacent keys. The province is located east of the central region of Cuban territory. Itis in turndividedinto 10 municipalities: Ciego de Ávila, Chambas, Florencia, Majagua, Venezuela, Baraguá, Morón, Bolivia, Primero de Enero and Ciro Redondo.

International Master

The title International Master is awarded to chess players who are below the level of grandmaster but above FIDE Master. Instituted along with the Grandmaster title in 1950, it is a lifetime title, usually abbreviated as IM in chess literature.
