Rafael Rodríguez Agüero, Division General of the Liberating Army dies in Havana

In the 19th  Century Independence Contest, he joins the cavalry in Camagüey following orders of  Major  General  Ignacio Agramonte who he helped, and also participated in different combats. He was one of the 35 combatants that accompanied Agramonte in the rescue of Brigadier General  Julio Sanguily.

Ignacio Agramonte

Major  General of the  Liberating Army Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz  born in today´s province Camagüey,  was one of he most outstanding fighters of the so-called  Ten Years War which started in Cuba in 1868. Since he joined the struggle, being only 26, he excelled due to his political and military conditions. After that, Agramonte continued  taking part in many other actions until his fall in Jimaguayú, on May 11, 1873.

Julio Sanguily

He was a Cuban independent fighter of the 20th century, whose birth occurred in Havana on November 9, 1845. He joined the Ten Years War in December, 1868, disembarking in Camagüey in the Galvanic expedition. Being Brigadier he was captured by the Spaniards on October 8, 1871 and rescued the following day by Major General Ignacio Agramonte´s forces. This event went down in history as the Sanguily Rescue.  He died in Havana on March 23, 1906 when he was 60 years old.
