Brigadier General José Miró Argenter died in Havana

He was a great  chronicler of the Independence  War which was restarted in 1985.  Thanks to his precise and detailed narration, Cuban can have valuable information about different events, episodes and personalities of this outstanding time of our history. In  October, 1895, he joined the Invading Column headed by Antonio Maceo which set off from Mangos de Baraguá  and finally arrived in Mantua, the most western province of Cuba in Pinar del Río. On December 7 that same year, on Antonio Maceo´s fall in San Pedro, Miró Argenter was one of those who rescued the corpse of the brave pro-independence fighter and took him to  The Cacahual  to bury him in secret  so that his mortal rests could be preserved.

Mangos de Baraguá

This is a place that, given his historical importance, was declared  National Monument some years ago. It is located in the Province of Santiago de Cuba. In Mangos de Baraguá,  in March 1878,  the significant interview of Antonio Maceo and Spanish General Arsenio Martínez Campos took place. Maceo became a symbol of  Cubans´ revolutionary intransigence when he said that he did not accept the capitulation in signing the so-called  Zanjón agreement  and that he was willing to continue fighting for the independence of Cuba, in the midst of extremely difficult conditions.

Mantua

Mantua is the head town  of  the similar name of Pinar del Río Province. It is estimated that the foundation of this town in Mantua around the year 1716 is due to the presence of a river with the same name,  and the existence of very  fertile tobacco vegas, sporadically irrigated by their floods. This district has 914.65  square kilometers; 15. 30 belong to its adjacent keys and coasts. It is characterized by a varied relief. It also has elevations, Northern shales,  as well as mountainous valleys, blades and large valleys.
