For the first time in Cuba, May 1 Day is celebrated.

This date was  agreed to be  a celebration a year before in the Second International Congress held in Paris. Although the Cuban worker movement was by that time in its beginnings, that struggle echoed when the Worker Club of Havana organized a parade which ended in a more- than- three-  thousand people meeting and about twenty speakers. It was in 1939 when a big parade took place in the Cuban capital called by the Workers Confederation of Cuba, three months before the constituent congress of the organization was held.   On that occasion the big parade started from the intersections of Belascoain  and  San Lázaro in Havana and ended in Parque Central.  Many leaders spoke on behalf of the workers , among them  Lázaro Peña.

Lázaro Peña

He was born on May 29, 1911 in  Havana. Lazaro Peña was an outstanding trade union leader. For many years and different periods, he was Secretary General of   the Central Cuban Workers. He was considered an educator of trade union leaders and  was called the Captain of the Cuban working class.
