Competitions were held in 34 conventional sports and one as exhibition. The general total of participants was 4,910, of them 2,088 athletes, 823 women and 1,265 men. When delivering the opening address of the event, Cuban President Fidel Castro said: “Everything we have done and will do in the field of sports will not be for the vain glory of our people.”

#S1Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum

It was inaugurated on February 24, 1958 to replace the old Sports Palace. It has a capacity for around 17 thousand people. World boxing, fencing, weightlifting championships and other sporting events have been held In the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum, as well as cultural shows and political events. It is located on Vía Blanca and Avenida de Rancho Boyeros. At present, the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, INDER, is based there.
