Havana reports 476 of the 813 new COVID-19 positive cases confirmed in Cuba

The doctor Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology for the Ministry of Public Health, informed in a press conference that by the end of yesterday, March 19th, 813 cases were confirmed as positive to COVID-19, for a total 65 962.

To date, 397 deceased were reported (five within the day), 931 were discharged (also within the day), 3 452 (5.2%) were confirmed, of which 3 384 (98.3%) have a clinically stable course, and we arrive to 62 062 (94.1%) people medically and epidemiologically discharged. There are 29 patients in a critical state and 39 in a serious one.

Of those diagnosed, 476 are residents of the capital, of which 471 are autochthonous and 5 imported. Due to the increase in the case amount, the presence, dispersion, and rising tendency in all municipalities, the province will continue to be in the epidemiological phase know as Limited Local Transmission Stage, also having the highest incidence rate which is 284.6%, being lower than the one of the day before.

The largest amount of PCR tests, which was a total of 8 294, were done in this province which constitutes the 41.9% of the total done in the whole country. The most affected municipalities of the capital were: Habana del Este and San Miguel del Padrón (53 each), Boyeros (45), Arroyo Naranjo (40), Cerro (37), Guanabacoa and La Lisa (34 each), Diez de Octubre (30), Centro Habana (28), Habana Vieja (27), Playa and Regla (21 each), Marianao (19), Cotorro and Plaza de la Revolución (18 each).

Ten of these municipalities are among the twelve where the 46.9% of the COVID-19 incidence has been located in the last 15 days. These territories are: Habana Vieja (481.5%), Regla (444.7%), San Miguel del Padrón (382.8%), Guanabacoa (378.3%), Centro Habana (367.8%), Cotorro (363.7%), Cerro (318.6%), Habana del Este (297.9%), Diez de Octubre (283.5%), and Arroyo Naranjo (272.8%).

Respecting the short term forecasts given by Francisco Durán about the infection in Havana, there will continue to but a high incidence in the following days. He stated some positive facts that will help in the control of the COVID-19. For example, he mentioned that two of the five Cuban vaccine candidates: Soberana 02 and Abdala are in phase III of clinical testing. However, he expressed that satisfactory results cannot make the population neglect the health measures issued, all of this due to the complex epidemiological context of the country.

The other confirmed cases belong to other provinces like Santiago de Cuba (90), Sancti Spíritus (22), Granma (41), Pinar del Rio (27), Artemisa (25), Holguín (22), Camagüey (20), Guantánamo (15), the Isle of Youth (11)  Matanzas (7), Ciego de Ávila and Villa Clara (5 each), and Las Tunas (4).

For the COVID-19, 19 788 samples were analyzed, and 813 were positive. The country has had a total of 769 474 samples analyzed, and 65 962 of these were positive (2.38%).

758 (93.2%) out of the total of confirmed cases were contacts of other confirmed ones, for a total of 60 459, which represents a 91.6%; 16 (2.0%) of these were infected abroad for another total of 4 964 (7.5%), and 39 were infected by an undetermined source.

This Friday’s autochthonous cases were a total 797, and 16 were imported. A total of 410 (50.4%) of these were female and 403 (49.6%) were male.

A total of 21 084 patients are still hospitalized under clinical and epidemiological surveillance, 3 919 are suspected cases, 13 713 are under surveillance, and 3 452 (5.2%) have been confirmed, of which 3 384 (98.03%) have a stable clinical course.

The 55.6% (452) of the 813 positive cases were asymptomatic, for a total of 34 792, which represents the 52.7% of all the confirmed cases to date.

The 813 diagnosed belong to the following age groups: 110 below the age of 20 years old; 243 between 20 and 39 years old; 281 between 40 and 59 years old, and 179 above 60 years old. 

COVID-19 fatality rate in Cuba, until March 19th, is 0.59% per one million inhabitants, lower than that of the whole world (2.20%) and the one of the American continent (2.40%).

Habana del Este: (53) (all contacts of confirmed cases)

Habana Vieja: (27) (all contacts of confirmed cases)

La Lisa: (34) (31 were contacts of confirmed cases and 3 were imported)

Marianao: (19) (all contacts of confirmed cases)

Playa: (21) (all contacts of confirmed cases)

Until March 19th, it is confirmed that 190 countries and 29 territories present COVID-19 cases. There is a total of 122 661 150 confirmed cases (+ 693 191) with 21 092 134 active cases, and 2 707 145 deceased (+ 11 974) for a fatality rate of 2.20 (=).

In the American continent, 54 588 890 cases were reported (+ 216 539), which is a 44.50% of the total amount of cases confirmed worldwide, with 9 350 442 active and 1 309 494 deceased (+ 6 230) for a fatality rate of 2.40 (+0.01).
