Havana has 446 of the 689 new COVID-19 positive cases confirmed in Cuba
The doctor Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology for the Ministry of Public Health, informed in a press release that by the end of yesterday, March 17th, 689 cases were confirmed as positive to COVID-19, for a total 64 414.
To date, 384 deceased were reported (four within the day), 828 were discharged (also within the day), 3 596 were confirmed, of which 3 536 (98.3%) have a clinically stable course, and we arrive to 60 378 (93.7%) people medically and epidemiologically discharged. There are 33 patients in a critical state and 27 in a serious one.
Of those diagnosed, 446 are residents of the capital, all of them are autochthonous. Due to the increase in the case amount, the presence, dispersion, and rising tendency in all municipalities, the province will continue to be in the epidemiological phase know as Limited Local Transmission Stage, also having the highest incidence rate which is 278%, being lower than the one of the day before.
The most affected municipalities of the capital were: Diez de Octubre (53), Centro Habana (47), Arroyo Naranjo (42), San Miguel del Padrón (39), Habana del Este (37), Cerro (32), Regla (29), Guanabacoa (28), Marianao (26), Boyeros (24), Habana Vieja (21), Playa (16), Plaza de la Revolución (15), and Cotorro (9).
Ten of these municipalities are among the twelve where the 47.6% of the COVID-19 incidence has been located in the last 15 days. These territories are: Habana Vieja, Regla, Guanabacoa, Centro Habana, Cotorro, San Miguel del Padrón, Cerro, Arroyo Naranjo, Habana del Este and Diez de Octubre.
The other confirmed cases belong to other provinces like Santiago de Cuba (47), Granma (36), Artemisa (28), Camagüey (20), Holguín (19), Pinar del Rio and Guantánamo (16 each), Mayabeque (15), Matanzas, Guantánamo, Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus (9 each), Ciego de Ávila (8), Cienfuegos (7), and Las Tunas (4).
For the COVID-19, 19 537 samples were analyzed, and 689 were positive. The country has had a total of 730 305 samples analyzed, and 64 414 of these were positive (2.36%).
658 (95.5%) out of the total of confirmed cases were contacts of other confirmed ones, for a total of 58 992 (91.6%); 10 (1.4%) of these were infected abroad for another total of 4 938 (7.7%), and 21 (3.05%) were infected by an undetermined source.
This Wednesday’s autochthonous cases were a total 679, and 10 were imported. A total of 350 (50.8%) of these were female and 339 (49.2%) were male.
A total of 21 619 patients are still hospitalized under clinical and epidemiological surveillance, 3 681 are suspected cases, 14 342 are under surveillance, and 3 596 have been confirmed, of which 3 536 (98.3%) have a stable clinical course.
The 41.9% (289) of the 689 positive cases were asymptomatic, for a total of 33 971, which represents the 52.7% of all the confirmed cases to date.
The 689 diagnosed belong to the following age groups: 104 below the age of 20 years old; 221 between 20 and 39 years old; 261 between 40 and 59 years old, and 103 above 60 years old.
COVID-19 fatality rate in Cuba, until March 17th, is 0.60% per one million inhabitants, lower than that of the whole world (2.21%) and the one of the American continent (2.39%).

Until March 17th, it is confirmed that 190 countries and 29 territories present COVID-19 cases. There is a total of 121 492 220 confirmed cases (+ 550 956) with 20 861 384 active cases, and 2 685 458 deceased (+ 10 276) for a fatality rate of 2.21.
In the American continent, 54 170 546 were reported (+205 912), which is a 44.58% of the total amount of cases confirmed worldwide, with 9 326 677 active and 1 297 725 deceased (+ 4 926) for a fatality rate of 2.39.
