It is one of the 15 municipalities in the province of Havana. It is located in the south center of the province. It has an area of eighty-three point three square kilometers and in its territory there are institutions of great relevance, such as Lenin Park, the National Botanical Garden and the Permanent Exhibition of the Republic of Cuba, EXPOCUBA.

 

Several months after the struggle for independence was restarted in 1895 in Cuba, the deputies of the five Corps of the Liberating Army met in the area of Jimaguayú, in the province of Camagüey, to analyze a draft constitution and thus legally structure the Republic in arms. Three days later, the Jimaguayú Constitution was approved, which was expected to be in force for two years, if the war of independence was not concluded before.  The Constituent Assembly of Jimaguayú proclaimed Cuba as a democratic Republic separated from Spain. Also in this meeting of the Cuban patriots that took place until the 18th of that month, the establishment of a centralized regime composed of a Government Council with legislative and executive powers was approved. This council would be composed of a President, a Vice President and four Secretaries of State who would attend to matters of war, interior, foreign relations and finance.

 

It is the higher local entity of the State power in the territories and is invested with the highest authority for the exercise of state functions in their respective demarcations, as established by the Constitution. In addition, the Assembly contributes to the development of activities and the fulfillment of the plans of the units located in their jurisdiction that are not subordinate to them in by law.

 

 It is the supreme organ of the power of the State. It represents all the people and expresses its sovereign will. It is the only body in the Republic with constituent and legislative powers. Its deputies are elected for a period of five years. Every new legislature elects its President, Vice President and Secretary from among the deputies.
