The Boyeros municipality has an area of 134.2 square kilometers. Its relief is almost entirely flat with undulations that form small plateaus and some heights towards the southeast belonging to the foothills of the Bejucal-Madruga-Coliseo-Limonar group. The history of this municipality is linked from its remote origin to that of Havana. It acquired greater connotation as its communication routes grew, first with the southern royal road and then with the coming into operation of the railroad in 1837. This municipality is home to the José Martí International Airport, the largest and most important in the country, inaugurated in 1930. There is also a monument complex in Cacahual, where the remains of the great Cuban independence fighter Antonio Maceo and his assistant Francisco Gómez Toro were secretly deposited in December 1896.

It is one of the 15 municipalities in the province of Havana. It is situated in the south east area of the province and has a 69.5 square kilometers surface.

Plaza de la Revolución constitutes a unique Municipality not only in Havana, but in Cuba in general. It was created in 1976 when another administrative political division was applied in Cuba. It has a surface area of just over 11 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest municipalities in the country. The Central Committee of the Communist Party, the Presidency of the Republic, the government, various ministries, the National Library, the National Theater and the José Martí Memorial have their venues in its territory.
