He was born on November 2, 1898 in the town of Ranchuelo, then province of Las Villas. Graduated as Doctor in Civil Law and Public Law, he developed as a notable Cuban politician and intellectual. He participated in the Protest of the Thirteen and was a member of the Minorista Group and the Patriot Veterans Movement. He fought against the governments of Alfredo Zayas, Gerardo Machado and Carlos Mendieta, for which he suffered imprisonment and exile.
After the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, he was Rector of the University of Havana, Cuban ambassador to the United Nations and vice-president of the National Assembly of People's Power.
His work as a pedagogue was extensive and spanned several countries.
He died in Havana on March 27, 1977.
He was an outstanding bacteriologist who made important studies and discoveries in medicine. He contributed to the development of the diphtheria vaccine, isolated and identified different pathogenic microorganisms and obtained sera against tetanus and typhoid fever. He was called "the wise man who dreamed of bacteria". He was born in Sabanilla Del Comendador, present town "Juan Gualberto Gómez," Unión de Reyes, belonging to the province of Matanzas, on November 6, 1857.
He was born on December 24, 1881 in Spain. He initially wanted to be a painter, but later some Sevillian writers encouraged him to venture into the field of letters. As a writer he was the author among other works of the book Platero y Yo. He passed away in Puerto Rico on May 19, 1958.

He performed complex ophthalmic operations for the first time in the country. He was a prestigious student leader and revolutionary fighter who was murdered on January 10, 1929 in the Mexican capital by those elements to the service of dictatorship regimen that existed in Cuba at that time. Mella had been born in Havana, on March 25, 1903. Since he was very young he manifested his political ideas and convictions and his willingness to contribute to the revolutionary fight within the University of Havana where he was studying at the time. At the end of 1928, he was linked to the Nationalist Party of Cuba and he proposed a joint action against Machado`s dictatorship. When his plans were known by the dictatorial regimen, he was murdered in the Mexican capital on January 10, 1929.
He was a Cuban independent fighter of the 20th century, whose birth occurred in Havana on November 9, 1845. He joined the Ten Years War in December, 1868, disembarking in Camagüey in the Galvanic expedition. Being Brigadier he was captured by the Spaniards on October 8, 1871 and rescued the following day by Major General Ignacio Agramonte´s forces. This event went down in history as the Sanguily Rescue. He died in Havana on March 23, 1906 when he was 60 years old.
