Camilo Cienfuegos

The Commander Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán was an exceptional fighter and a leader of the Cuban Revolution. He died on October 28th, 1959 when the light aircraft he was traveling on crashed in the sea. This February six we celebrate the 87 anniversary of Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán´s birth. He became a prestigious fighter and leader of the Cuban during the course of his short life. He was born on February 6th, 1932in a house located in Pocito Street 71 in Lawton, a neighborhood in Havana in the municipality Diez de Octubre. He showed his love for his family and his country since he was very young.

Literacy Campaign

The National Literacy Campaign allowed Cuba to eradicate illiteracy and facilitate universal access to different levels of education free of charge. In this campaign, in addition to teachers and other workers in the education sector participated in an essential way almost a hundred thousand young people who integrated the "Conrado Benítez" literacy brigades and taught to read, write to illiterate people even in very remote rural areas of the country. On December 22, 1961, in a symbolic act carried out in the "José Martí" Revolution Square in Havana, Cuba was proclaimed a territory free of illiteracy.

Chancellor of Dignity

He was thus qualified for his attitude in the defense of Cuba before the General Assembly of the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS), where he fought with the force of his vibrant words and a very special way of reflecting concepts as well as denouncing the aggressions that were being carried out against the Cuban Revolution. He began to be identified as Chancellor of Dignity when he participated in August 1960 in San José, Costa Rica, in an OAS assembly. On that occasion, after exposing forceful denunciations against the aggressive actions that were being forged against Cuba within that organization, manipulated by the United States, he announced his withdrawal from the meeting and emphasized: "I am leaving with my people and with my people the peoples of our America are also leaving".
