It is a traditional ballet work, with original choreography by Frenchman Roland Petit.

The leading role in this choreography fell to the prima ballerina Alicia Alonso, who performed it brilliantly and unforgettable, as a very seductive gypsy.

This work has been performed by various companies from different parts of the world and has been one of the most acclaimed ballets in Europe, Asia and America.

Among the most famous versions of that ballet is the one conceived in 1967 by the Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso.

Biografia de Rigoberta Menchú

She was a Guatemalan indigenous leader and defender of human rights. She was a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. She stood out for her leadership at the forefront of social struggles at the national and international levels.

On August 2, she was decorated in Cuba with the Ana Betancourt Order imposed by the President of the Council of State and Ministers of Cuba, Fidel Castro.

With her characteristic slow and precise speech, Rigoberta Menchú thanked the distinction and reflected on the relationship between the struggle of Guatemalan women from indigenous peoples and the aspirations for redemption of the oppressed in all regions of the planet.
