Benito Viñes Martorell - EcuRed

Born in Spain, he arrived in Cuba in 1870 to take charge of the Meteorological Observatory of the Real Colegio de Belén. In his capacity as director of the institution, he gave priority to the most urgent tasks, such as the restart of meteorological observations, the calculation, elaboration and publication of statistical climatological data from the observations registered in the observatory and the development of regular studies on tropical meteorology and weather conditions in Havana.

He was considered the true founder of cyclonic science, applicable in all regions of the planet where tropical rotating storms develop. With the use of the observations made about the direction of the cyclones and the respective analyses, he came to write works of great importance for said science, which enhanced the prestige of the observatory and the scientific movement in Cuba. His work transcended, as his ideas and theories were taken into account by a large number of meteorologists in the world during the first half of the 20th century.

In 1873 he was elected Member of Merit of the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana.
