Havana ephemeris. July 18.

1961. The Bay of Pigs Order is instituted in Cuba.

Cuba, Socialist Republic. An Order of Playa Girón, Single Class, c.1980

Its name is a tribute to the victory of the Cuban people during the mercenary invasion of the territory of Playa Girón, in the Ciénaga de Zapata, in the province of Matanzas.

This award granted by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba is awarded to Cuban and foreign citizens who have stood out in the struggle against imperialism, colonialism or neocolonialism, or who have performed great deeds for peace and for the progress of humanity.

Its preparation is in gold metal, with ribbon and pin. It presents on its obverse or front face a militiaman in a combat attitude, with one foot on the Cuban archipelago and the other on the American continent and the legend Patria o Muerte. On the reverse it is detailed: Playa Girón National Order.

 

1983. Mariblanca Sabas Alomá dies in Havana.

She was a Cuban journalist and writer who defended women's rights. She had the privilege of being the first female minister, without a portfolio, in the country.

She participated among the women who attended the First National Feminist Congress in 1923. She was part of the founders of the Retail Group, as well as various cultural and progressive organizations. She was present at numerous women's congresses in Cuba and abroad.

She worked as an editor in the main publications of her time, such as Bohemia, Romances, Carteles, El País, Excelsior, Avances and El Mundo. She was also a radio commentator on the CMQ station and took part in television programs on social issues.

Her birth took place in the city of Santiago de Cuba on February 10, 1901.
