Havana ephemeris. July 15.
1889. Laura Martínez de Carvajal became the first woman to graduate as a doctor in Cuba.
She attended primary school at the Manuela de Concha y Duval school for girls. She then moved to attend high school at the Colegio de San Francisco de Paula, where she graduated when she was thirteen years old, being the first female to graduate from high school in Cuba. Years later she entered the University of Havana in the careers of Physical-Mathematical Sciences and Medicine. Her years at the university were intense studies since she was studying two careers. As a student she was noted for her brilliance and the extent of her intelligence.
To achieve a medical degree, she had to overcome the ridicule and offensive comments generated by her mere presence in a classroom where all were men, not a few of whom described her as extravagant. She also suffered from the obstacles imposed by some teachers.
She was also the first graduated ophthalmologist in the country.
Her birth took place in Havana on August 27, 1869. Her death occurred in her hometown on January 24, 1941.
1925. In a Public Works law approved by Congress, the construction of Avenida del Golfo, today known as Avenida del Puerto, is projected.
The first construction work on the avenue or boardwalk at the entrance to the Havana port began on May 11, 1927. Many thousands of meters of land were taken from the sea for its construction. This Public Works plan named by the dictator Geraldo Machado as "Water, roads and schools" served from its beginnings as enrichment for Cuban politicians and businessmen. For its construction, the streets that lead to the great avenue were rectified and widened.
At present, the Office of the Historian of Havana has worked carefully in the conservation of this important avenue of the Cuban capital. Among the great transformations that can be seen are those experienced in the San José pier, considered the oldest in the Havana port, which after a careful rehabilitation gave its space to art and the healthy enjoyment of its visitors. The old warehouses of San José, after a meticulous restoration process of almost three years, exhibit a perfectly preserved and renovated steel structure.
