Havana ephemeris. July 11.

 

1800. José de la Luz y Caballero is born in Havana.

He studied at the San Carlos Seminary in the Cuban capital and was a student of Félix Varela, also known as Father Varela.

Later in the aforementioned institution, between 1824 and 1828, he held the chair of Philosophy. He then spent three years in Europe and on his return to Cuba he assumed the direction of Colegio San Cristóbal, in Havana.

Between 1835 and 1842 he held responsibilities in the Economic Society of Friends of the Country. He then fought to increase public instruction by publishing articles of a historical nature and also divulged the life and work of Cuban literary authors.

He devoted special attention to the improvement of teachers. He went so far as to affirm: “Let us have the teaching profession and Cuba will be ours.”

He considered that teaching should provide along with the instructions of human beings, moral, patriotic and ideological convictions, as well as respect for beauty in its various manifestations and even hygienic habits.

His concept of education was based on the active participation of students and he actually attached great importance to attending to the needs and motivations of children.

He was able to teach various science and letters subjects and always treated all his disciples and with whom he related in a general sense with simplicity and cordiality.

He died in Havana on June 22, 1862.

 

1996. Dr. Mario Rodríguez Alemán dies in Havana.

His birth took place on June 12, 1926, in the town of Sagua la Grande, in the then province of Las Villas.

When he was 13 years old he was orphaned and this meant that a short time later he began to carry out different tasks to help support the family. He managed to complete middle level studies and later studied Civil Law, Social Sciences and Diplomatic Law. It is at the University of Havana where he has his first contact with the artistic world when he enters the existing theater in that center. He graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy and Letters in 1952 and with a degree in journalism from the “Manuel Márquez Sterling” School. By this time he was already fluent in French, English, Italian and even languages ​​like German and Russian.

He was the founder and host of the famous Cuban television program called Tanda del Domingo. He was among the founders of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, the Union of Journalists of Cuba and the Research Center of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, ICAIC. He represented Cuba in important international events.
