Havana ephemeris. July 10th.

 

1853. Fermín Valdés Domínguez was born in Havana.

He was one of the great friends of José Martí, whom he considered as a brother. Valdés Domínguez studied medicine and later practiced that profession.

When Martí was exiled in Spain, (between 1871 and 1874) after having suffered political imprisonment and forced labor, and he was also sick and, of course, away from his family, Fermín helped him in a remarkable way.

Years later, when Martí also needed the help of Valdés Domínguez in the preparations for the war for the independence of Cuba, the dear friend responded to his call.

So Fermín made a trip to Venezuela on behalf of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and then held interviews with Martí in New York.

After Martí's death in May 1895, Fermín decided to make his direct contribution to the development of the struggle for Cuban independence. He arrived in Cuban territory on July 25, 1895 in the expedition led by Carlos Roloff.

In Cuba, due to his condition as a doctor, he was initially appointed chief of health of the fourth corps of Las Villas. He participated in the Constituent Assembly of Jimaguayú, in September 1895. There he was elected Undersecretary of Foreign Relations.

On December 19, 1895, he was appointed Chief of Health of the First Body of the East. Later, he temporarily occupied the Ministry of Foreign Affairs without abandoning his duties as head of Health, a position he resigned on July 13, 1896. Later he joined the headquarters of the General in Chief of the Cuban Liberation Army, Máximo Gómez, from whom He was head of office. On December 23, 1896, he was promoted to Colonel.

After the conclusion of the war in 1898, he lived in the Cuban capital. He did not hold any public office. He was a member of the Patriotic Junta of Havana, founded on October 10, 1907. He opposed the annexationist current that certain sectors promoted during the second US military intervention in Cuba, which occurred between September 1906 and January 1909.

Fermín Valdés Domínguez died in Havana on June 13, 1910.

 

1887. Antonio Mestre Domínguez dies in Havana.

He began his studies at the University of Havana, but later moved to Paris where he completed his full degree. He was one of the main promoters of a code of conduct for doctors. He is a member of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana, where he was secretary and founding director of his "Annals". He served as an eminent university professor in medical disciplines such as Physiology, Medical Clinic, Medical Pathology, Legal Medicine and Toxicology.

He was considered the founder of Modern Pediatrics in Cuba.

His birth took place in Havana on October 18, 1834.
