1934. Marta Valdés is born in Havana

She obtained a degree in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Havana and also studied harmony and composition.

She has created music for plays that achieved great notoriety in the country, such as El perro del hortelano, El Calf de Oro and la Casa de Bernarda Alba, and for several feature films, including the film Lucía, directed by Humberto Solás and produced in 1968 by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Cinema and Industry,

It was rated as one of the ten most important films in the history of Ibero-American cinema, as well as one of the ten anthological films of Third World cinema.

It reflects the story of three women at different historical moments in Cuba: the War of Independence (1895), the fight against the dictator Gerardo Machado (1933), and the first years after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

In addition to her work as a composer, Marta Valdés has stood out as a guitarist and unique performer.

 

1982. Raúl Roa García dies in Havana.

Throughout his fruitful life he stood out as an eminent writer, speaker and diplomat with a consistent revolutionary trajectory. Witness and protagonist of relevant events in Cuban history, he participated in the confrontation with the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado, who was overthrown on August 12, 1933.

Several decades later he also participated in activities against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. For this he had to leave for Mexico.

In 1959 he returned to Cuba when the revolutionary triumph took place. He was appointed Cuba's ambassador to the Organization of American States and in December of the same year Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until December 1976 when he was elected Vice President of the National Assembly of People's Power. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba since its constitution in 1965 and reelected in the first and second congresses of the Party, in 1975 and 1980 respectively.

Roa stood out for his qualities as a man of ideas and action and was qualified with the honorable title of Chancellor of Dignity.

His birth took place in the Cuban capital on April 18, 1907.
