Havana ephemeris. June 30th.

 

1900. The School of Engineers and Architects is created in Havana, attached to the University of Havana. It included the specialties of Civil and Electrical Engineering, as well as Architecture and Master Builder. In the initial stage, it began to function in the old convent of San Agustín. Then in 1902 it passed to University Hill. Then he was part of the Faculty of Sciences and Letters.

In 1937, when the teaching law was promulgated, twelve Faculties were created at the University of Havana, thus the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture appeared with new study programs that remained in force with slight modifications until 1960.

At present, engineering and architecture specialties are studied at the "José Antonio Echeverría" Technological University of Havana. In advance, it was identified as the "José Antonio Echeverría" Higher Polytechnic Institute. It is popularly known as CUJAE (José Antonio Echeverría University City) since there, in addition to the classrooms, laboratories and other teaching facilities, there are also the buildings where the scholarship students who come from other territories beyond Havana reside.

Her birth also occurred in the Cuban capital, in October 1856. As a child she showed a great talent for music. This was greatly influenced by the artistic environment in which she developed since she was a child, since her house was one of the most famous venues for the cultural evenings that took place in Havana at that time. With her father, the pianist and teacher Fernando Arizti, and the teacher Francisco Fuentes, Cecilia began her studies in piano and theory and music theory, respectively.

She was considered one of the most relevant pianists, composers and pedagogues in our country. About her work as a creator, specialists in the field have come to emphasize that her works stood out for their excellent harmonic invoice, mastery of technical composition, as well as the quality, fantasy and good taste they possessed. All these aspects made her deserve praise both from the specialized press, as well as from the musicians of the time. She mainly composed works for the piano, her favorite instrument and which she mastered perfectly.

In the field of teaching, she was a notable piano teacher. She gave private classes, as well as at the Carlos Peyrellade Conservatory, in Havana. She likewise wrote an exercise manual for the piano. She is considered the first composer in the chamber genre in Cuba.
