Havana ephemeris. June 27th.

 

1920. Zoila Castellanos, known in the artistic world as Tania Castellanos, is born in the town of Regla, in Havana.

From the artistic point of view she had a rich history. She gave a significant authorial contribution to the feeling movement that emerged in Cuba in the 1940s in the 20th century. She also had an extensive political career. After the triumph of the Revolution, she provided her decisive contribution to the development of Cuban music and at the same time she participated in carrying out dissimilar tasks. An example worth mentioning was the beautiful and emotional song that she dedicated to all the children of the world in which she emphasized the desire of children to live in peace. She also dedicated one of her works to Commander Ernesto Che Guevara, a creation that she titled Por los Andes del Orbe.

She was the founder of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, UNEAC, an institution that was created in our country in August 1961. She participated very actively together with her husband, the prestigious union leader Lázaro Peña, in multiple activities of political character.

She passed away in Havana on December 8, 1988. Her life and her work continue to be evoked by those who appreciate her creations as a hymn to life and love.

 

1975. The Pedagogue and Historian Fernando de la Cruz Portuondo del Prado dies in Havana.

He came from a family of patriots who actively participated in the Cuban War of Independence in the 19th century. He studied his first studies in his hometown where he graduated with a Bachelor's and Teacher's Degree. He began the profession of educator in primary education. In 1937 at the University of Havana he obtained the title of Doctor of Philosophy and Letters. In 1939, and for 23 years, he taught history at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de La Víbora in the Cuban capital. In this center he reached the position of Director. Years later he served as Professor of Cuban History at the University of Havana.

After the triumph of the Revolution with the creation of the School of History, he worked as Deputy Director, taught postgraduate courses and attended research projects. In the following years he headed the Humanities Section at the Pedagogical Institute.

He was a close collaborator of the City Historian Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring.

He held a position as Number Academician at the Academy of Cuban History and Member of the National Board of Archeology and the Friends of the Country Economic Society.
