2005. The relevant film director Pastor Vega dies in Havana.

He was 18 years old when he entered the Teatro Estudio Academy directed by the brothers Vicente and Raquel Revuelta. He participated as an actor with this group in various performances. He also acted in several movies. In 1960 he joined the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, known as ICAIC, as assistant director. In 1964, after working as an actor and assistant director on several documentaries and feature films, he was promoted to documentary director. As a documentary filmmaker he created, for example, ¡Viva la República! which became a movie classic. From 1970 he became a director of feature films. One of his most important films was Portrait of Teresa, starring his wife, the actress Daisy Granados, and Adolfo Llauradó. Parallel to his work as a film director, he also held various responsibilities. In 1979 he was among the founders of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema and directed its first twelve editions. He was also one of the founders of the International School of Film, Television and Video that is located near the town of San Antonio de los Baños. His work in Cuban cinematography was successful since he obtained multiple awards and other recognitions in different international festivals.

His birth took place in Havana on February 12, 1940.

 

2010. Roberto Friol Martínez dies in Havana.

Between 1935 and 1948 he attended primary school, high school and even enrolled in medicine at the University of Havana, which cannot be completed due to economic limitations. In 1949 he published his first poems in El País Gráfico. The following year he entered the Normal School for Teachers. Later he practiced teaching for several years in schools of different levels of education.

In 1953 with his first research work "Life and work of Martí" he obtained the provincial prize in the Contest for the Centenary of the Master, organized by the Directorate of Culture of the Ministry of Education.

With the course of its existence, he collaborated with different publications, among which were Bohemia, Unión, Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional José Martí and the Bulletin of the Institute of Literature and Linguistics, among others.

As of 1962 he works as a literary researcher at the "José Martí" National Library. Two years later he served as Advisor to the Department of Technical Processes, attending to the Cataloging and Classification of Books and Brochures, in that institution.
