Havana anniversaries. April 25.

 

1914.   Manuel González Guerra is born in Havana.

In his youth he practiced various sports and in the 1950's he was president of the Baseball League of the Amateur Athletic Union of Cuba.  

In 1963 he was appointed President of the Cuban Olympic Committee.  In 1973 he served as an effective member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).  He received the Olympic Order, the highest award granted by the International Olympic Committee.

He died in Havana in 1997.

1987.   The prestigious communist leader Blas Roca Calderio died in Havana.

He was born on July 24, 1908 in the city of Manzanillo into a proletarian family. From 1931 he was part of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and in charge of its organization in the province of Oriente. He carried out a great revolutionary activity which caused him to be imprisoned on several occasions. Later he was the General Secretary of the People's Socialist Party.

After the victory of the Revolution in 1959, with the simplicity and dedication that characterized him, he offered his contribution to the development and defense of the revolutionary process. Due to his great merits and self-sacrificing work, he became a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and also effectively performed the functions of President of the National Assembly of People's Power.
