Havana anniversaries. April 19.

1846.   Manuel de Zequeira y Arango dies in Havana.

His birth took place in the Cuban capital on August 28, 1764.

He was considered the first Cuban poet, not in the chronological sense, an honor reserved for Silvestre de Balboa, but in the symbolic sense, for his quality and lyrical vocation, and for his conscious knowledge of his poetic instrument.

He is also known as the first poet with a sustained vocation. He recreated the tenth giving it a more cultured treatment, without losing its natural grace. Likewise, in his poems we can observe the morose mythological treatment of our nature, defending the quality of what is Cuban.

1971.   The Commander in Chief Fidel Castro pronounces a speech in the central act in commemoration of the X anniversary of the victory of Playa Giron, carried out in the Theater of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba.

In the first part of his speech he said: "With this simple but combative act, we have commemorated those events.  The battles of the Bay of Pigs constituted an episode whose historical importance we ourselves did not understand at that time in all its magnitude.

"Our combatants simply went to confront the enemy, full of ardor, and did their duty.  They did not go there to write a page in history.  And yet, oblivious to that purpose, they really did write a page in history."
