Havana Anniversaries. April 19th.

1965.   Revolutionary César Escalante dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on December 12, 1915.

A communist leader, he dedicated his whole life to the cause of national liberation. He also fought in favor of the sugar workers in the region of Güines, now Mayabeque province, participating in strike movements. After the revolutionary triumph, he assumed important responsibilities, among others, the organization of the National Revolutionary Militias, in whose ranks he fought against the mercenary invasion that landed at Playa Girón. He was a member of the Communist Party of Cuba and its Central Committee, where he was in charge of historical matters.

1989.    Cuban President Fidel Castro lights the Eternal Flame to the Heroes of the Homeland, located in the Granma Memorial of the Museum of the Revolution, in Havana.

The monumental complex where the pentagonal star from which the pyre emerges, symbolizes the memory and homage to those heroes who raised the flags that our mambises bequeathed and, to the new call of the bugle, threw themselves into the combat for the independence and national sovereignty, for socialism and proletarian internationalism.
